Since the release of his acclaimed debut album Kickinit Alone, that Kiefer Shackelford has become an absolute must-know name in the contemporary jazz fans. The LA-based pianist, beatmaker, and composer is perhaps one of the musicians of our time, though his influential imprint is not yet completely visible—or audible. The new album, When There’s Love Around, is a project full of nostalgia and self-reflection, evident in the melancholy peace it conveys. You can hear Kiefer at the height of his immense abilities, this time superbly accompanied by a band featuring talented people like DJ Harrison, Andy McCauley, Josh Johnson, Will Logan or Sam Wilkes. It's an interesting contrast to the mostly solo work that has marked his discography so far.

When There’s Love Around is a two-part album. The first parte addresses an inner attitude of irrelevance and insignificance towards difficulties when analyzed from a cosmic perspective. The second half of the album is more reflective and spiritual. It carries a cathartic aura, caused by the loss of Kiefer’s beloved grandmother. Although grief and loss are the main themes, the tone is still largely positive, giving enough space and time for the melodies to bring peace and acceptance. Along with some of his favorite musicians, Kiefer produces this album in three sets of sessions that took place in 2020, including a stopover at Jazzy Jeff's studio after the legendary DJ invited him. Several of the songs featured in When There's Love Around were recorded in one or two takes. This can be heard in the organic textures that the album provides. Bringing the energy of his concerts into the studio, Kiefer successfully embraces the community spirit he sought in his work, producing an exceptional jazz album. Available on vinyl starting next friday via Stones Throw Records.
