DOBRO presents a surprising LP from Macedonian producer Green Sequence, landing an impressive debut album titled Southern Soul Fi. Following up on a couple of low-key EP’s on the Slightly Transformed imprint, Green Sequence showcases his talent, with dusty blends of jazz instrumentation, warming grooves and choice samples more often than not hitting the spot.
He begins with a dash of slow-motion, head-nodding grooves, before serving up nine floor-friendly workouts that explore the woozier and sunnier side of MPC-driven deep house loveliness. Moments like the Rhodes-laden brilliance of “Leavin”, or the disco-sampling, bass guitar-propelled deep dive of “Messing The Harp” are examples of the brilliance you’ll find in that play button above. There’s plenty more to Southern Soul Fi, with the rubbery excellence of “Voovojgrad” (which makes great use of chunks of an obscure, horn-heavy Eastern European big band soul jam from the 1960s), the deliciously dubby, breakbeat-driven deep house shuffle of “Moonlanding” or the lo-fi nostalgic progression of “Zajdi”. Twinsting and turning thorugh Southern Europe’s beautiful landscape, Green Squence provides a record that is already one of our favorite underground gems of 2023.
