alex nut: present under construction ep

Francisco Espregueira

It feels like the day has finally come for Alex Nut to truly step forward — with Present Under Construction EP arriving via Eglo Records as his first official solo statement. This four-track release is a warm collision of worlds: spiritual jazz, deep-house, dub grooves, hip hop flourishes and analogue electronics. The textures are rich and lived-in — built from old MPC2000XL sketches, reworked with collaborators like Sam Crowe on Fender Rhodes, Prophet Rev 2 and Moog, then chopped and restructured until they found their final shape. The lead track, “andthenitstarted”, features soulful saxophone by James Mollison, and the EP closes out with two remixes by the legendary Patrice Scott and Last Nubian. A nice nod to the broader Eglo family ethos.

The EP feels like a gentle manifesto: a bridge between decades of underground curation and a new horizon of personal expression. Alex Nut has long been a curator, DJ and tastemaker — helping build Eglo into one of London’s most respected hubs for broken-beat, deeper shades of house and left-field grooves. But here, Alex Nut is the one speaking. Present Under Construction doesn’t take flashy leaps — it strolls thoughtfully, inviting that classic Eglo warmth and care into each sound. Whether you lean deep into the Rhodes hum or the dusty drum-machine shuffle, the EP is kind of a homecoming: for the label, the man behind it, and maybe for a groove-hungry listener ready for something honest and soulful. Available on vinyl, this is def one one of our favorite records of late 2025.
