jerk: some cosmic shift
Francisco Espregueira
Getting back to our rhythm, we recap one of the most surprising releases from this month: Some Cosmic Shift explores, in an unique sounding way, the connections between avant-garde jazz compositions and classic hip hop elements. Released by Deep Matter, this is the second album from multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer, Jerk - the brainchild of Brooklyn-based Joshua Kinney. Some Cosmic Shift follows a trio of EPs (Pink, Yellow, and Green) and a full-length beat tape entitled Pressing On, and is Jerk’s most complete work to date.
The lively sensations absorbed from the album, cement the idea we got whilst reading Joshua’s notes on it. In his words, Some Cosmic Shift is the result of cathartic moments of creation, as opposed to his academical background and profession. It is also an album that reflects the changes in his life - progressively, the heaviness from day-to-day routines disappears and elements start floating around with ease, groove, sensation. Available digitally via Deep Matter, Some Cosmic Shift marks our return to the features.
