Hailing from Mumbai, Kumail is a new name that we are adding to our weekly discoveries. Via the incredible collaboration in “Same Shit” with Pink Siifu (currently one of our favorite hip hop artists), we were magnetically invited to delve into his last project: Yasmin. What began as a study of modern soul music – drawing heavily from R&B, jazz and hip hop – eventually sprawled to include flavours from across the world and time, ignited by crate diggings that lead to invaluable revelations.
Including scents of 80’s Japanese funk, crackling gospel, shiny disco, cutting-edge LA beat music and the omnipresence of J Dilla, Yasmin is the result of the explorations of Kumail - over struggles with sleeplessness and anxiety and countless nights spent making music to distract from a lack of inner calm and rest. One of the surprises of the end of 2019 on hip hop and R&B rotations, Yasmin is available to be discovered. Slowly on its details.
