rush city x handerk: cosmic vibrations ep

Francisco Espregueira

Ritmo Terco is a new independent label hailing from Bogotá. Created by Iván Lozano, a.k.a. Joint4Nine (whom we featured here before), and Jonathan Lopez, a.k.a Jonahlo, the Colombian imprint is dedicated to paying tribute to the roots of electronic dance music, combining the old school gritty sound with a modern vanguard touch. Their debut EP, Cosmic Vibrations, introduces us to the in-house production duo Rush City and Handerk, fusing house, techno, tribal, hip hop, reggae, breaks and African percussive themes with ease.

This blend of textures, exposed in four tracks that are reminiscent of the electronic music from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, also gives us a good perspective on Colombia’s mix of cultures and sounds. The A-Side opens with “Feel The Rush” and its heavyweight bassline, hipnotic synth phrases and a catchy dub vocals. “Cosmic Vibrations” is an 80’s dub hip house style tune with an uplifting message of unification and love for planet earth. The B-Side keeps the sonic-deepness with “C-Rush On U”, a deep vocal acid house reminiscent of Larry Heard’s 80’s deep house movement. Closing the release, the Rush City duo show up their remix skills with a minimalistic 90’s deep raved up version for “C-Rush On U”. Cosmic Vibrations is a strong debut record from Ritmo Terco - inviting to rebel against opression, to let yourself go and just dance to good music with a strong and positive message. On friday, vinyls will be up for grabs.
