sampology: ripen vol. 1
Francisco Espregueira
Via Middle Name Records, Ripen Vol. 1 is the latest offering from Meanjin/Brisbane's multi-talented Sampology. Across five brilliant tracks we listened to a compelling, vibrant and emotional work, proudly introduced as fruit of human collaboration. Featuring fourteen artists brought together under Sampology's keen direction as writer, composer, arranger, producer, and mixer, Ripen Vol. 1 was recorded at his own Middle Name Records studio. The project showcases a rich tapestry of instrumentation, from vocal trios and lush strings to a dynamic rhythm section including congas, timbales, synths, and drum machines. It’s a truly organic creation that feels both intricately crafted and inherently soulful.
Ripen Vol. 1 opens with "Morning Sun," an uplifting track perfectly soundtracking an optimistic daybreak, elevated by the harmonious choral trio of Tiana Khasi, Hannah Macklin, and Kalila. The journey continues with "Ripened," which introduces the compelling spoken word of South Sudanese poet and activist NMMWL in her recording debut, laid over soulful instrumentation. The EP's feature track, "Marigolds for Movement," lives up to its name, blending acoustic textures of conga, strings, and horns with acid-tinged 303 basslines and spacey synth chords for a unique mix of sunshine and vibrant energy. The rest of the EP fades out with Brazilian-influenced vibes in “Saba Sampo”, evoking sunset energies, positivity and warm colours all throughout. Beyond the audio, Sampology extends the experience into a distinct visual world, with mixed media artwork that collages his floral photography with the EP's vibrant orange, yellow, and teal palette, documenting the very environment where Ripen Vol. 1 came to life. Ripen Vol. 1 is one of the records for our summer. Available on vinyl.
