shane cooper & mabuta: finish the sun

Francisco Espregueira

Having dropped via Dox Records last friday, the second European visit from Shane Cooper & MABUTA was fruitful resulting in an exciting jazz fusion album entitled Finish The Sun. Following their debut album Welcome To This World, the sophomore project by the South African collective is rooted in grooves from all around the African continent. The six-piece outfit moves through Mali, Nigeria, Ethiopia and the many sounds and influences that make up their native nation.

Throughout eight tracks we can listen to hot and heavy afrobeat get downs, cinematic journeys, maskandi, hip hop bounces, or a slow sways. Influenced by the present moment and the feelings that arise from the connection to the environment around, the music in Finish The Sun flows easily with well defined and energetic tempos. Bringing many different styles together was faced with a joy that is evident on the project. That vibe is expressed in style. Available on Bandcamp, via Dox Records.

A few years ago I was sitting outside with friends having coffee before a rehearsal. It was early spring and the sun was about to set. Someone suggested we go inside to start the session. I suggested we first “finish the sun”. Those words became like a mantra over the last two years while I was creating this album
