sofatalk: the soul's code
Francisco Espregueira
SofaTalk presents The Soul's Code, just released on Oath. This sophomore album project showcases his eclectic vision, weaving together a tapestry of styles that defy easy categorization. Easier to say that it touches on electronica, the producer’s Italian roots, the nu-jazz movement, and a vast array of global underground sounds. An "alchemist of beats," SofaTalk, who also heads the very cool Cognitiva Records and hosts a radio show on Universal Rhythms Radio, collaborates with Veezo and Zopelar on this release, further enriching its diverse sonic landscape.
The album's journey is a winding path through genres, from the dub-infused charm of "Dub Lush" (feat. Veezo) to the tense, soulful loops of "The Truth," and the bewildering blend of house, funk, and broken beat in "Paradiddle." The sonic exploration continues with the lo-fi spirit of "Complex Journey," the jazz-house fusion of "Around," and the Latin-tinged, fidgety house of "Out of Nowhere" (feat. Zopelar). "Drum Circles" builds a percussive foundation, adding a wobbling bassline for depth, while "Magpie Rules" concludes the album with a dream-like essence, blending breakbeat rhythms with surreal overtones and mind-bending melodies. The Soul's Code is another one of Sofa Talk’s superb releases that we’ve been covering here for quite some time. This project showcases his evolution, and ability to seamlessly blend disparate elements in groove, creating a cohesive record that defies expectations in a very positive way.
