azymuth: marca passo
Francisco Espregueira
Marking an incredible fifty years since their seminal 1975 debut, Azimuth, the legendary Azymuth unveils Marca Passo, a testament to their enduring vitality. Released on Far Out Recordings, this new album proves that the band's alchemic blend of Brazilian jazz-funk and cosmic samba soul remains as captivating as ever, a poignant honor to the profound legacy of their departed founders. Recorded in Rio de Janeiro, Marca Passo is their first full-length offering since the passing of founding drummer Ivan "Mamão" Conti in 2023, following the earlier loss of keyboardist José Roberto Bertrami in 2012. Alex Malheiros, the sole remaining original member, continues his stewardship of the band's musical heritage, joined by the equally devoted Kiko Continentino on keyboards and new recruit Renato Massa on drums, ensuring Azymuth's unmistakable "three-man orchestra" sound endures.
Marca Passo seamlessly continues Azymuth's rich legacy, fusing Brazilian musical traditions with global influences and showcasing the exceptional musicianship that fuels their distinctive, multi-dimensional sound. Produced by the acclaimed Daniel Maunick, who also helmed their previous studio albums, Fênix (2016) and Aurora (2011), the album features a special tribute to keyboardist José Roberto Bertrami with a new version of their eighties classic "Last Summer In Rio," featuring Daniel's father, Jean Paul "Bluey" Maunick of Incognito, on guitar. Furthermore, "Samba Pro Mamao" is a new composition dedicated to their beloved original drummer, Ivan "Mamão" Conti. This highly anticipated album, is available on vinyl, courtesy of Far Out Recordings.
