ex generation: the mumbai exchange
Francisco Espregueira
Energy Exchange Records continues its transcontinental sonic explorations with the release of The Mumbai Exchange, the ambitious new full-length from EX GENERATION. Following the critical success of their Mediterranean-soaked The Napoli Exchange, the duo—comprised of 30/70 collective alumni Ziggy Zeitgeist and Lewis Moody—shift their gaze eastward to the bustling epicenter of Bollywood. Deep diving into the crate-digger's paradise of 70s and 80s Bollywood Disco, filtered through the pair's signature production style that has long defined the Energy Exchange imprint’s reputation for fusing broken beat, future soul, and jazz-rave aesthetics. Recorded at Island City Studios in Khar West, the project sees the duo assembling an A-team of local talent, bridging their modern electronic sensibilities with centuries of tradition.
For this journey into Maharashtra's cultural heartlands, Zeitgeist and Moody have enlisted award-winning vocalists Vinay Sugatha Ramadasan and Anuja Zokarkar to bring a profound lyrical depth rooted in North-Indian classical poetry. The result is a "spicy masala" of sound where cinematic drama and acid jazz textures collide with hedonistic disco heat. It’s a vivid tapestry that feels both unapologetically rhythmic and emotionally complex, weaving ancient metaphor with new age production. The Mumbai Exchange stands as a testament to the universal language of groove, capturing the intoxicating sights and heart-wrenching emotions of India while proving that EX GENERATION are masters of cross-cultural musical alchemy. Available on vinyl, this is a unique piece.
