flying moth: tide ep
Francisco Espregueira
Italian producer Niccolò Terranova, known for his jazz-laden dance music projects like Justnique, emerges with his latest and most personal alias, Flying Moth, on Soul Quest Records. His new offering, the Tide EP, sees him don a "mothman outfit" to deliver an exquisitely expressive and groove-rich take on deep house music, perfectly suited for those matutinal hours. This collection is presented as the artist’s most intimate work to date, building on the foundation laid by his previous Oh Oh EP on Apparel Music, which showcased his ability to craft highly danceable and beautifully presented soulful dance music brimming with heartfelt moments and genuine emotion.
The Tide EP is a captivating journey through richly displayed musicality and profoundly composed pieces, channeling a myriad of genres and eras to create fresh sonic experiences. Tracks like 'Bobby's Here' and 'Take You Higher' evoke lepidopteric flying, moving from a smooth jazz Sunday drive to a "wonkier Monte Carlo camber," complete with subtle supersaw textures and delicate plinks. The EP also features intriguing collaborations, with Gondii joining on 'Always Groove In You,' layering stripped percussion under shifting keys and vocal textures, and a bold, "wearily methylated" floor cut from Toronto Hustle and Sean Roman, who rework 'Please, Keep Drinking With Me.' Available on vinyl.
