midva: summer cuts
Francisco Espregueira
With Summer Cuts, MIDVA steps into the warmer end of the spectrum on Dope Tones Records, delivering a compact but rich EP rooted in groove, spontaneity and feel. Led by Strasbourg-based pianist and composer Nils Boyny (MIDVA) alongside drummer Joël Brown and bassist Natsu, the trio moves fluidly between broken-beat, contemporary jazz and deep-house sensibilities. Dope Tones has been quietly carving space for forward-thinking sounds that sit between club and live expression, and this release feels right at home in that vision.
The originals carry the energy of their moment: quick takes, instinctive playing, and a strong sense of place. “Stras City Bruk” nods to Strasbourg’s long-standing relationship with broken-beat culture, while “Deep Jam” leans into dancefloor hypnosis without losing its improvised core. The remix section opens things up further, with Tom Manzarek and Divorce From NY pulling the music toward club territory, and the label crew reshaping “Stras City Bruk” with added weight and bass pressure. Summer Cuts feels like a short, sunlit window into a scene that values movement, collaboration, and groove above all else. Available on Bandcamp.
