oye manny: living water
Francisco Espregueira
Darker Than Wax makes a bold return to vinyl after more than two years with DTW081. Houston-born DJ and producer Oye Manny is in charge of this ride. Known for his output on labels like Salon Recordings and Fat Beats, Manny's musical taste was shaped by his Colombian roots, and it's something you can feel in his cool, effortless approach. Deep rhythms, Latin roots showing, and pure authenticity weaving laid-back congas and thumping bass lines with a vibe that just feels right.
This new record, Livin Water, is a deep and personal project that channels a sonic current, with a percussion work playing a starring role from start to finish. The album embodies Manny's connection to the spiritual and fluid power of water, flowing from the chord-driven house stompers on the A-side like "Malta Sip" and "Palmira" to the darker club tones of "Visaje" on the flip. The package is made complete with a deeper, Chicago-inspired remix of "Malta Sip" from Darker Than Wax family member Dexter Colt. One of the rising names of the scene with another superb piece.
